Muslims, Anti-Islam protesters clash in ugly confrontation in Arizona

The two groups of protesters screamed at each other across a line of police.

Anti-Muslim demonstrators wearing T-shirts declaring “F*** Islam” faced off against counterprotesters in front of a Phoenix mosque Friday night.

A total of 250 anti-Islam activists faced off against about the same number of pro-Muslim demonstrators as they both yelled at each other across a line that was guarded by police, according to a Washington Post report.

No violence was reported, but it was a tense scene for all involved.

The protest was organized by Jon Ritzheimer, who said he was trying to fight back against what he termed as the tyrrany of Islam in America, and that he wished other similar protests would spring up elsewhere in the United States.

Usama Shami, who is the president of the Islamic center, called the protests “bigotry,” and said the crowd was essentially a group of neo-Nazis that is afraid of multiculturalism.

Ritzheimer had decided to start protesting after police killed two Phoenix residents who had attempted to storm a Muhammed cartoon-drawing contest in Texas earlier in the month, which prompted him to start making T-shirts. He then organized a protest at the Islamic Community Center in Phoenix, and found dozens of likeminded folks.

Ritzheimer said Muslims have threatened him on Twitter and that doesn’t feel safe in his home, prompting him to tell participants on Facebook to bring weapons just in case.

However, Ritzheimer said he didn’t regret his actions despite the threats, comparing himself to the Founding Fathers when they risked their lives by signing the Declaration of Independence. He called himself a “patriot.”

Some at the rally did express regret over the inflammatory message of their T-shirts, with one quoted in the report as saying that he wouldn’t wear the shirt again.
