Gwyneth Paltrow officially bows out of food stamp challenge with $80 plate of BBQ

The gesture was an attempt to rally attention toward the government’s food-stamp program, which is currently under fire in Missouri and Kansas.

The evidence is in: actress Gwyneth Paltrow and her family could not survive a week on just $29 worth of food stamps – the amount given by the USDA to families on their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

On April 9 Paltrow posted on Instagram that she was “walking in their shoes to see how far [her family will] get.”

The gesture was an attempt to rally attention toward the government’s food-stamp program, which is currently under fire in Missouri and Kansas.

What she “got’’ for her family with the $29 worth of food stamps during the  #FoodBankNYCChallenge included a dozen eggs, tortillas, dry black beans, brown rice, an ear of corn and a sweet potato. They also included cilantro, seven limes, an avocado and a tomato, the Hollywood Reporter noted.

It appears as though Paltrow was planning a vegetarian Mexican meal, perhaps featuring guacamole and margaritas, the newspaper reported.

The actress then set back into her more comfortable brand reality when she was spotted at an $80-per-plate barbecue restaurant, Animal, hanging out with boyfriend Brad Falchuk, Jon Favreau and Jimmy Kimmel, as well as David and Victoria Beckham.

As for the controversy over her high-priced dinner, it may be a simple case of misleadingly timed Instagrams, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

“She finished the challenge last week but only got around to posting the photo of the groceries on [Thursday],” her rep told the newspaper.

And when asked if Paltrow paid for her barbecue dinner or got a comped meal, her rep said: “That’s really no one’s business.”
